Astronomy Ambassadors & Work Experience available at Royal Observatory Greenwich

There are some really exciting, up-coming opportunities available to all you budding astronomers and those interested in space science and science communication at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Astronomy Ambassadors Group

The Astronomy Ambassadors Group is a place for young people (between 16 and 21 years old) to get a taste of the work we do at the Royal Observatory and explore their passion for Astronomy, Space Science or Science Communication.

Join us, meet other like-minded young people and make meaningful contributions to the work that the Royal Observatory does.

Sessions we've run in the last few months include free planetarium shows, private tours of our collection centre, introductions to using telescopes, and writing content for the website - check that out here!

Work Experience at the Royal Observatory Greenwich

Applications for our work experience programme for August 2024 will open in October, with applications open until 31st January 2024!

This opportunity is ideal for students in Years 12 and 13 who wants to find out more about working in science communication and those who want to get experience in working in a museum.

What would a work experience student do?

A work experience student will learn more about astronomy and science communication and will be involved in a number of things including, but not limited to,

  • creating posts for the official Royal Observatory Greenwich Twitter/X account (@ROGAstronomers)

  • sitting in on some onsite sessions for schools and the public, evaluating the sessions and suggesting improvements. The sessions you'll sit in on include planetarium shows and/or workshops.

  • writing a script of what's in the night sky for a particular month to be included in our Look Up! podcast.

  • chatting with one of the astronomers to find out about what it's like to be an astronomer. You'll be able to ask them any university or careers related questions you may have.

How many places do you have?

Presently, we are only able to offer six students work experience placements at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, covering three weeks in August with two students each week.

Will all activities take place onsite at the Observatory?

The activities you will be involved in may take place online, onsite or may be a hybrid (this will be discussed with the successful applicant). Wednesdays will be a work from home day.

How do I apply?

Applications for 2024 will open in October and will close in January. Information on how to apply will be added to the webpage soon - https://www.rmg.co.uk/schools-communities/work-experience-royal-observatory-greenwich
